Weekend trip Part:1 -Glastonbury Abbey, Tor, and Chalice Well

Glastonbury is cool for a couple of reasons: first, it is believed that Joseph of Arimathea brought Jesus Christ here before his ministry began. Second, it is believed that Glastonbury is the location of King Arthur's legendary island of Avalon. The combination of these two religious and superstitious beliefs make Glastonbury the ULTIMATE hippie town. Loved it!

This guy rocked the dulcimer. I know, a dulcimer.....so cool. The Pink One could not wait to put some coins in his case.

Twins.

"King William," pretty self explanatory.

The Glastonbury Thorn is where they believe that Joseph of Arimathea planted his staff in the ground and it turned into this tree. A flowering sprig is sent to the British Monarch every Christmas.

The most amazing magnolia tree I have ever witnessed. The Pink One could not get enough of the flowers, she collected them and carried them around with us.

Climbing, always climbing.

Blue skies in a picture! I know, could I still be in England?

This is where King Arthur and Queen Guinevere are buried.

Arthur and Guinevere.

Just a few of my favourite things.

All decked out in the time period.

Carving of Christ in the crypt under the Abbey.

Chalice Well is where it is believed that Joseph of Arimathea brought the chalice that caught the blood of Christ and buried at the bottom of the Tor (a big hill). Meaning that Glastonbury is home to the Holy Grail. It is believed that where the chalice was buried a well sprang forth. It has also been believed that this well is one of the alleged to be the "Fountain of Youth." I drank and drank, didn't work ;) I did tell the Pink One that if she drank the water that she would not get a day older than she is now and then asked her if she still wanted to drink the water. She didn't. I told her it wasn't true as she burst into tears that the Blue One wouldn't get older.

The well head at Chalice Well. Some believe that the line down the middle represents "Excalibur" King Arthur's famous sword.

Chalice Well with the piggies. This picture is telling of the different personalities of my two piglets. The Pink One obviously upset that the Blue One has taken something (a candle) off the well that didn't belong to us. Shame on him! The Blue One obviously looking well pleased with his new treasure. We replaced it when we left, Pink One was relieved.

Windy. Very, very, windy.

In memoriam.

Heading up the Glastonbury Tor was quite the workout, but very much worthwhile. John got the better part of the workout as he hauled the Blue One all the way to the top on his shoulders. There are perks to being the camera lady :)

The tower is simply a tower, you cannot go inside as there is no inside. We lied to the Pink One and told her it was Rapunzel's tower so that she would walk up the hill. Great parenting right?

A view from the top of the hill allows you to see 4 different counties. All you can see is green, patch of village, and more green. Beautiful.

St. Michael's Tower

"YOU!"

Windy and cold, but she loved every minute of the hike up the Tor.

Coming soon!
